[8:00 am] - DEPART TO CIENFUEGOS

Cienfuegos was the smallest of Cuba’s Provinces. In 2011, a redistribution of boundaries made Havana and Isla de La Juventud smaller by definition. Don’t let the size of this province fool you; it is abundant with history, culture and some of the most exciting natural reserves and protected areas in all of Cuba. Although the economy has always been entirely dedicated to the growing and processing of sugar, the untouched landscape of the mountains offer spectacularly appealing scenery with waterfalls, and protected areas of great value for Cuban botanists, zoologists and ecologists. Cienfuegos is home to the Archipelago de los Canarreos, a geological formation of roughly 350 islets teaming with marine life and the home to some of Cuba’s most important efforts in conservation and protection of natural resources. There are over 50 dive sites in the province. And the city of Cienfuegos is an impressive port city that was once the center for the sugar cane, mango, tobacco and coffee production and trade in the Caribbean.

[10:00 am] - CITY TOUR CIENFUEGOS HISTORIC CORE

Declare a national monument it has numerous interesting sites to visit like Jose Marti Park where there is the island's only Arch of Triumph. Surrounding the square there are important buildings like the Thomas Terry Theater and La Casa del Fundador.

Matanzas is the second largest province in Cuba and is largely flat, spreading from the north to the south coasts of the island. Located east of Havana, the province is home to distinctly cultural and historic city of Matanzas built between three major rivers and lying on the large Bay of Matanzas. If it is the white sand and crystal clear water that calls you, the beach resort town of Varadero is just a short drive from the city to the Hicacos Peninsula. Traveling inland toward the southern coast of Cuba, lies one of Cuba’s most distinctive features, the large swamplands of the Cienega de Zapata - home to the Bay of Pigs.

[12:00 pm] - LUNCH AT CUEVA DE LOS PECES

If you don't fancy diving in the sea, head to the Cueva de los Peces, a 70m-deep cenote (flooded tectonic fault) on the inland side of the coast road halfway between Playa Larga and Playa Girón. It's a pretty spot as popular with swimmers as snorkelers for spotting tropical fish. The brave can glide into the darker parts of the underwater cave with diving gear. Hammocks swing languidly around the crystal clear pool, while the beach opposite calls to you.

There’s a handy restaurant and an on-site dive outfit that also rents snorkeling gear

[2:00 pm] - VISIT PLAYA GIRON MUSEUM

This museum with its gleaming glass display cases evokes a tangible sense of the history of the famous Cold War episode that unfolded within rifle-firing distance of this spot in 1961. Across the street from Villa Playa Girón, it offers two rooms of artifacts from the Bay of Pigs skirmish plus numerous photos with (some) bilingual captions. The mural of victims and their personal items is harrowing and the tactical genius of the Cuban forces comes through in the graphic depictions of how the battle unfolded. A British Hawker Sea Fury aircraft used by the Cuban Air Force is parked outside the museum; round the back are other vessels used in the battle.

You can walk up and down the aisles between stands, while the vendors play their maracas and claves in the morning breeze coming off the bay, and find everything from traditional souvenirs, original paintings, an impressive array of fashion, leather goods and accessories, all designed and handmade by local talent. Your last stroll through the picturesque, narrow streets of Old Havana and farewell ride up the Malecon will leave the indelible mark on your memory that Havana inevitably leaves on all who have made her acquaintance and dream of returning to explore the rest of this island paradise.

One of the most dramatic examples of modern architecture in Havana, if not the world, is the Plaza de la Revolución José Martí. The Plaza is among the largest civic plazas in the world, measuring nearly 24,000 sq. ft., surrounded by modern construction and featuring the enormous obelisk monument to Jose Marti, built on the highest ground in Havana.
