Trinidad es la máxima joya de las ciudades coloniales de Cuba y fue declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO en 1988. Detenida en el tiempo ya que fue el centro del comercio de azúcar cubano en el siglo XIX, su historia y arquitectura datan de principios del siglo XVI y es una de las ciudades coloniales mejor conservadas del Caribe. Al igual que Sancti Spíritus, Trinidad fue fundada por el conquistador español Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar como otra de sus villas y, a principios del siglo XIX, la ciudad creció gracias al comercio de azúcar y esclavos y no se escatimaron gastos en la fabricación de los mejores vestidos españoles. casonas coloniales, plazas e iglesias, que aún permanecen como testimonio de la vanagloria de esta época de especulación.
